Bicycle Accidents and Injuries

Summer is almost over and with its passing goes the most dangerous time of the year for bicyclists. Over a third of all bicycle fatalities occur in the summer months. Interestingly, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's database indicates that most fatal bike accidents occur in urban areas (66 percent) and are between the hours of 5PM and 9PM (30 percent). Unfortunately, children account for 21 percent of the fatalities. To prevent or minimize accidents, we recommend the use of a helmet. Wearing a helmet has been shown to reduce the chance of serious injury by up to 85 percent. Wearing highly visible colors is another way to reduce the chance of an accident. Avoiding biking at night is another key strategy in preventing bicycle injuries. Even if precautions are taken, accidents happen and oftentimes the cyclist is not at fault. Over 40 percent of bicycle accidents occur t intersections, primarily because drivers do not give cyclists enough room to maneuver. If your bicycle accident was caused by an irresponsible driver or an unsafe road condition, contact us.

  1. Bicycling is not inherently dangerous, even at night; bicyclist behavior, which improves markedly with education and experience, is--by far--the primary factor in bicyclist safety.

The sole reason for more bicycling crashes in summer is that less-experienced bike riders do most of their bicycling in warmer weather. Most bicycling crashes occur in urban areas because much more bicycling, especially by less-experienced bicyclists, occurs in urban areas.

The often-repeated claim that bicycle helmets "reduce the chance of serious injury by up to 85 percent" is based on flawed 'research'. Like seat belts and airbags in autos, bike helmets don't prevent any crashes; they simply *may* reduce the extent of head injuries in the event of a crash. Nevertheless, like occupant protection in autos, routinely using a bicycle helmet is a wise measure.

The most effective way to improve ones safety as a bicyclist is to complete bicycling skills training, preferably from an instructor certified by the League of American Bicyclists. Learn how to safely and comfortably operate your bicycle on the roadway as a driver of a vehicle, following the uniform rules of the road for all vehicle operators. Bicyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles.

  3. If we or our loved one is injured or killed - due to the negligence or fault of a motorist of other party, while riding a bicycle, & We bring a lawsuit against the negligent party to recover damages. As a matter of fact, if the at-fault party does not accept responsibility. then what should i have to do.
